Handcrafted daily on the West 12th Street corridor. Sourdough, viennoiserie, and a curated grocery counter built around real ingredients and honest hours.
Our Story
Painted Rooster started with a simple conviction: that the bread on your table should taste like something made by a person who cares about it. Not a factory schedule. Not a compromise on time or temperature.
Our sourdough ferments for 36 hours. Our croissants are laminated by hand every morning before the doors open. The produce we select for the grocery counter comes from regional farms we've actually visited and spoken to.
It's a small operation. That's the point. We'd rather do less and do it right than fill every shelf with something mediocre.
From the Bakery
Our menu shifts with the season and with what the local farms are bringing us. Here's what you can reliably find — and what's rotating in.
36-hour wild-ferment loaf with a shatteringly crisp crust and an open, tangy crumb. Our daily staple — baked from our 12-year-old starter.
French-style laminated dough, 72-hour rest, European-style butter. Honeycomb interior. We make them by hand before sunrise, every day.
Buttery brioche loaves and rosemary sea-salt focaccia, rotated weekly. Both are made from scratch — no shortcuts, no preservatives.
Shortcrust pastry filled with pastry cream and topped with whatever fruit is at its peak. Strawberry in June. Pear in October. We don't force it.
The Pantry
Behind the bakery case is a small selection of groceries we've personally vetted — olive oils, vinegars, local honey, pastas from small producers, and seasonal preserves. We stock what we'd keep in our own kitchen.
No filler. No mystery ingredients. If we wouldn't serve it to a friend, it doesn't go on our shelves.
